Our Story

A Passion for Books

Sarah Meadham founded The Book Ferret in 2010 building on her years of experience as a bookseller in Worthing. Sarah and her whippet assistants - Sylvia, Ivy and Waverly - soon became much-loved members of the Arundel community, and The Book Ferret an established part of the town centre.

In 2023, as other opportunities opened up, Sarah decided it was time to move on. The shop was bought by James Doyle, a former bookselling colleague and long-time friend of Sarah's, and the handover was finally completed on January 25th 2024.

James is passionate about books and reading, and has years of experience working in and managing a bookshop, although this is his first experience of 'flying solo'. Although he can't claim to have read everything (this was a bitter realisation for him at the age of 9), he is widely read and constantly adding to the list of books read, with three or four books on the go at any given time.

James wanted to give the regular customers and friends of the shop time to adjust to a new face behind the desk before changing the name, so on June 20th 2024, The Book Ferret became The Crow Road.

The Crow Road name comes from the title of a book by Iain Banks, an author, who brought his Scottish perspective and dark sense of humour to a huge range of books that bridged the gap between contemporary literary fiction and science fiction. Mr Banks was loved by his fans, and much missed.
